As soon as you step off the shuttle boat onto Ludlow’s Island Resort, you’ll quickly realize that you won’t want to leave any time soon. It feels as if the weight of everything has been lifted off your shoulders. Quite literally, because once you step onto the island, staff are waiting to collect your luggage and bring it straight to your cabin.

“Guests are blown away once the guys come down and start bringing up their luggage,” laughs Kelly Berg Ludlow, who manages the island with her husband Paul Ludlow.

“Most don’t realize the depth of service we offer at Ludlow’s. We’ll haul your luggage, your groceries, and anything and everything someone could ask for, we can take care of.”

You’re a World Away

The five-acre private island offers a respite like no other, nestled along Lake Vermilion and under a canopy of pine and birch.

“So many of our guests come from Chicago or the Twin Cities and immediately feel safe letting their kids explore. We’re completely contained on the island, so kids can let loose, and then, so can the parents!” says Kelly.

Ludlow’s offers such a unique experience for guests. Even though you’re just a short boat ride from the mainland, once you’re at Ludlow’s, it feels like you’re a world away. The 100-plus-year-old resort has been updated with modern amenities, and numerous cabins dot the island, each distinctive and tucked away, so it feels truly private and secluded.

“We know this might be one of the few times for guests where they really unwind,” explains Kelly. “People step on the island, breathe a sigh, and just relax, knowing they can do all the activities we offer, or they don’t have to do anything at all.”

The island offers excellent activities for kids and adults alike. While fishing and guided fishing trips are always a big draw for guests, you’ll also find tons of free watercraft options that guests can use on a first-come, first-serve basis, including paddleboards, paddle boats, hydro bikes, kayaks, and canoes.

“We also have boat rentals of different sizes for guests to take out on the lake to fish, watch a sunset, or go tubing or water skiing,” says Kelly. On land, guests can indulge in spa services and get pampered with a massage, manicure, and pedicure.

Their one-mile hiking trail loop on the north shore is a beautiful stroll, and “in fall, the trail is truly gorgeous,” shares Kelly.

Nearby Adventures

While many decide not to leave the island during their whole stay, if you’re feeling adventurous, the area offers several excellent golf courses like The Wilderness at Fortune Bay and The Legend at Giants Ridge.

“Ely is also a great day trip, where you can tour the International Wolf Center, North American Bear Center, or Dorothy Molter Museum,” says Kelly.

“What I truly recommend for every guest who stays at Ludlow’s is to slow down and watch the sunset,” says Kelly. “It’s the perfect ending to a day on the island.”

Whether you embrace the island’s tranquility or venture out to explore the area, Ludlow’s Island Resort promises an unforgettable experience where the worries of the world seem to vanish the moment you step onto the dock.
