Ludlow's Island Resort

Don't expect to rough it at this pampering getaway on an island in northeast Minnesota's Lake Vermilion. Except for outstanding service, your stay can be as private as visiting your own posh vacation home. When you arrive, use the old-time phone on the dock to call the shuttle that whisks you to the island for check-in at the main lodge. Mark Ludlow and his wife, Sally, probably will greet you on the other shore. Mark's family has owned the island since 1929.

The 11 island cottages and five on the mainland (one to five bedrooms) range from a remodeled 1934 log cabin to spacious new homes. Secluded among tall pines steps from the lake, all have fireplaces and cushy, newer furnishings. Kitchens come with microwaves and dishwashers. Fresh croissants wait on your doorstep Sunday mornings. Rates include a fishing boat and motor.

You can pretend yours is the only cabin around or meet your neighbors at the beach or in free fishing clinics. Other facilities/activities: tennis, racquetball, sailboats, canoes, kayaks, ski boat and pontoon rental, hiking trails, playroom, exercise room, sauna, airport pickup.
